Problems of "English" Slumdogs

Everyone seems to be going crazy on Slumdog. People are watching Free Screenings everywhere. Dany Boyle is all over NPR. Even KCRW is talking about it. NPR even had a segment on "HINGLISH" as a related Looks like FOX is backing it in a big way.
In next few days you'll read a lot of great things about the film. And thats why I feel I must write this post & express the things that didn't work for me. This is not a review of Slumdogs. Its mostly the issues I had with the film. And it mostly stems from a common problem of all such films.
I went into the film with a lot of anxiety. I have a major pet peeve when it comes to American/British directors come to India & make films. With the exception of of Gandhi, nothing has worked for me. Lets say its the WHITE MEN's ACHILLES HEEL, when it comes to making films in India. I watched 2 of the most celebrated films about India - A Passage to India & The River. I found both the movies unbearable. And THE RIVER changed Martin Scorcesse's life. Its very hard for me to watch rural or poor Indians speaking English on screen. Have you seen a South American or European film where the characters talk in accented English because the film needs an wider audience? The only example I can recall right now is my fav director Julian Schnabel's beautiful mistake Before Night Falls. And Julian learnt from his mistake. In his next masterpiece The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. The french are speaking french. No Kidding!
When I heard Danny talk about how Loveleen Tandon asked him to make the film in Hindi, I was quite relieved. But I was also surprised that someone had to say that to a genius like Boyle. But the film is mostly English. A Inspector talks to his constable in English. No Kidding. Two uneducated, brothers from the slums talk to each other in English. I didn't buy the logic given in the film. They made the kids speak in hindi. And thank god for that. The kids were the best part of the film.
And then there is the case of casting a British actor Dev Patel in the lead role. I saw the Q&A @ Toronto Festival on Youtube last month & that's when i found out the actors are not Indians. I was quite shocked. And my fears did come true. You can hear a slight British accent in his English. And it becomes progressively stronger as the film reaches its climax. His brother was probably the strongest character in the film, but when the grown up version starts talking in English it just took the fizz out of the film.
And that language problem also leads to problems with acting. For Danny Boyle to get the nuances of that is unfair. It usually only works the other way when Non English Speaking Geniuses go to Hollywood & make films there (Cuaron). Sometimes the acting just seemed like the actors are just following instructions. And the scene where the Brother says"GOD is GREAT". Come the fuck ON Danny. For a second I thought I was watching a Subhash Ghai film.

Now I also feel the film must get nominated for two things - Cinematography & Adapted Screenplay (maybe Editing too). The movie starts with such a fucking bang. The first 30 minutes will blow anyone's mind. It has such a kinetic energy about it(City OF God like). Its also when they are kids & speaking in Hindi.
If you see or hear Danny Boyle promoting the film you can tell what happened. He got so blown by the visual possibilities of the film, it just overtook him. He literally showed the whole country in the film. In 2 minutes. Watch a part of it here -

It is also the most kinetic film Danny has made since Trainspotting. And it will go down as his best since Trainspotting. I think it will take the Best Cinematography award.

Funniest Obama Video

So, our President has a sense of humor.
This is a CSPAN video from a 2005 Fundraiser where he is talking about Rahm Emanuel.
We all know now that Rahmo has been chosen to be the designated ASSHOLE of Obama Cabinet. This video will also explain why Obama chose him. It also might in their genes. He is the brother of Hollywood Superagent Ari Emanuel on which the character of Ari Gold in based on ENTOURAGE.

A New World

Last Tuesday Americans finally lived upto their responsibilities & put a Black Family in White House. It was a Historic day for mankind, up there with Berlin Wall & 9/11.
I went to the Democratic Party's Official Party at the HYATT@ Century City. What a bad idea it was. For a historic moment like this they should have had the party in a stadium or a Block Party in Downtown. It was overcrowded. So we stood around & drove back home.
It was also a very sad day California. Prop 8 passed, thus banning Gay Marriage. Having been to a friend's wedding few months back, it was also a personal loss for a lot of us. But I also feel its only a matter of time before they get this right again. LA has been witnessing protests after protests since election night. This Saturday the biggest protest rally happened right in my backyard - SilverLake.
I found this video on 236 which best sums up the right wing fear mongering propaganda during the election. Enjoy

Sepember/October 2008 Books

1) White Tiger - Arvinda Adiga
The 4th debut to win the Man Booker Prize ever. I finished this book yesterday & today it wins the Booker. It was a very interesting book. But I'm very surprised that it was a finalist. Now it has become the winner. We have a new star here. Move over Arundhati.

2) Spike, Mike, Slackers, & Dykes: John Pierson
The Father of Independent cinema of 90s takes us on "A Guided Tour Across a Decade of American Independent Cinema".

3) Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov
All these years of hype kind of spoilt it for me. I got a little bored towards the end.

4) Half A Life - V.S.Naipaul
After reading Magic Seeds I was thinking I wanna know about Chandran's Life before Magic Seeds. And then next week I found out that Magic seeds is a sequel of sorts to Half A Life. Had to read it. Very good. But not among his best.

5) The Hungry Tide - Amitav Ghosh
Amitav is Subrat's sentimental favorite author. So I had to read his work. It was a good book, but maybe not his best. Next I'm gonna try Calcutta Chromosome.

6)High Concept: Don Simpson and the Hollywood Cultures of Excess - Charles Fleming
Cocaine,80s & Blockbuster movies.

7) Maximum City - Suketu Mehta
Finally read a book I bought 3 years back. Must read if you wanna understand Bombay.

8) Unaccustomed Earth - Jhumpa Lahiri
Liked the title story. Like her winning debut, I have mixed feelings about this one too.

Reading -
The Sundance Kids: How the Mavericks Took Back Hollywood - James Mottram

The Road - Cormac McCarthy

August 2008 Books

I have decided to keep a note of all the books I'm reading. Just to have some kind of list for me. I been reading insanely last few months. Almost 8-10 books a month. So much that i find it hard to remember all the books i read last month. Hence this list.

I'll start with August 2008

1) Lessons from a Lifetime of Writing : David Morrell
Creator of RAMBO, David Morrell gives some really good insights. I would reccomend this book to all.

2) Bend in the River - V S Naipaul
Naipaul at his detached cynical best.

3) Magic Seeds - V S Naipaul
The first bad book from Naipaul. And what makes it worse is that its a sequel to HALF A LIFE which I have not read & didn't know about it till 30 minutes back. But also while reading this book, i kept think about Willie's past life in Africa & that Naipaul should have written more about that. Now i'm glad theres a whole book about that.

4) NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN - Cormac McCarthy
Great book. Its really painfull to read a great book after having seen the film. But i'm doing this as a screenwriting exercise. Read the book -> Read the Script -> Watch the film.
Lets see if its a good exercise.

5) ANIMAL FARM - George Orwell
The best short novel I have read so far. 96 pages that can be finished in one afternoon over 3 cups of tea & lots of tears for 'Boxer'. I think ANIMAL FARM should be made required reading in schools all over the world. The best satire on communism that I have ever read.

6)You'll Never eat Lunch in this Town Again - Jullia Phillips

The producer of Taxi Driver, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and The Sting tells her story of being the 1st female to win that Oscar to playing with the boys in the 70s. Half the book is about cocaine though. Everything else happens inbetween. Its the seventies. Everyone except Spielberg was high. Good but very long book.

Rock On

I have to say Rock On has surprised a lot of people with its popularity. For a genre of music which is popular among only 4% of the population, this is quite an achievement for the people behind the film. I remember all the arguments we had in PFC when the trailer first came out, all those 4% Rock junta were really worried that Bollywood is going to rape their world. I remember telling them that from the trailer it seems like its the best we can expect for a genre which has never taken off except for the 4%, majority of whom have a very high self esteem just because they listen to Rock Music. And let me tell you that is exactly why Rock music has not taken off in India.
I have lived in the world of ROCK ON. You can say a very de-glamourised version of that. I was a roadie of my college rock band & later on to a few Heavy Metal bands from Bangalore. After a while I got very disillusioned by that scene. The condescending attitude that most of these guys had towards anyone who was not into their music became unbearable after a while. It was a self-masterbatory world at its best. OFcourse there were a lot of other external factors which happened to me at the right moment to have realised that, but thats a long story & irrelevent in this post.

When I saw the trailer of Rock On I was just happy that a movie about a Rock Band was made in mainstream Bollywood. Something unthinkable just a month back. All the bands in the film sing in Hindi & seem very popular. Which is not how that world is. But the irony is if we really had Hindi Rock artists, the genre would have really taken off. Instead we have everybody trying to be Megadeth or Slayer. And thats the reason Pakistani Sufi Rock is so Huge. The artists there sing in the language of their & their people's soul. And not in the language of their favourite band from UK/USA.

I think I should start talking about the film at this point. The 1st thing that impressed me was the Lighting of that basement. The DP( couldnt find his name on IMDB) did a great job in the film. Its very painfull to watch all the mainstream bollywood films trying to be "MTV Stylish" with no subject to match that. I can say after DCH this was another film where the style finally found its subject. Because of the subject all that jazzy camera angles( which dominates every mainstream film out of Bombay) didnt seem over the top.

The script was pretty well crafted. My favourites would be the consistency of Debbie's(Shahana Goswami) character & the way Aditya's(Farhan Akhtar) ex-girlfriend track was tackled. Shahana Goswami was the best actor of ROCK ON. Hands Down. Where did they find her? I really liked the fact that Debbie never gets senti in the whole film. Even in the climax she's doesn't wanna let go of Joe. In the end she is defeated by their passion. I was so relieved that she didn't get senti & let Joe go like any other film. It was also a rare film where the Husband was very cool with his Wife's ex-Boyfriend. Esp since they were rivals(BTW I had guessed this was gonna happen when CHAKRAVYU were walking off the stage). But I feared that the Husband might turn out to be the Villain of the 3rd act. And was relieved & surprised to be proved wrong.
ACTING -
Shahana ruled the movie all the way for me. Purab had the best lines in the film & he did a good job of it. To some his character might be the most likable. I thought Luke Kenny was as good as him. It was sad that they had to force the ultimate movie cliche of brain Tumor on him in the climax. Farhan did a very decent job of acting. I really liked his reaction shots. He is not any great actor for sure. He is a director who was playing a character he understands well. Like Jaideep said, he might be playing himself, but he played well & we should acknowledge that. The one actor who dissapointed me most was Arjun Rampal. Esp in the dinner table scenes where Debbie is nagging & complaining. He had this same expression throughout the film. Perhaps his take on the character was different & valid, but it didn't work on me. I thought his character could have been the guy that the audience would most empathize with. Arjun just seemed a bit stiff to me. Arjun knows this world. He has sang a great song for Sandeep Chowta's band PULSE called "Don't Marry" years back. I even saw them live in 1995 in Bangalore.

MUSIC -
For a film about Rock Scene of India, should the music be done by people who came out of that scene? Like Vishal & Shekhar? I have to say it was very weird that the weakest part about a movie about rock music was its lyrics. And that bothered me to no end. It was ridiculous. I mean SINDBAD THE SAILOR? I mean What The Fuck! With all due respect to Javed Saab & his genius, maybe this was a form a music he shouldnt have given lyrics to. Except for the song in the climax dedicated to Joe, Farhan's singing abilities left much to be desired. But That song was really well sung by him. Maybe they should have had the music of PAANCH in ROCK ON.

BTW the best band/song of the film I thought was the band of kids that we see before Magik in the [V] Launchpad in the climax. Even the lyrics were not that atrocious.

In the end I would say it was a good film. When Rock fans were bitching about it after seeing the trailer I told them that they are asking too much & when people were going ga-ga over it I didn't raise my expectations one but. I didn't have any high expectations from the film, & got exactly what I expected from it. I don't think I can expect a movie about a Rock Band to be really Raw & real with this kind of budget. What I hope is it will inspire a few rock bands who will sing in Hindi & make the genre more popular. Thats one thing we can learn from our Pakistani brothers.

Best Pop Music right now

This sunday I went to Hollywood Bowl for a Gnarls Barkley concert. The output for the singer Cee-Lo wasn't that great. But their music is mindblowing. I think they are the best thing that has happen to POP MUSIC this Decade.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnarls_Barkley

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd2B6SjMh_w

They ended the show with a cover of a Radiohead song Reckoner. It was bliss.
http://hypem.com/search/gnarls%20barkley/1/

Would you agree that they are the best pop act of these times? Cee-Lo is so good.

Also I was thinking of having my own charts here. My favourite top 10 songs of the month.

EVERYTHING is ILLUMINATED or How I discovered GOGOL BORDELLO!

Do you believe in destiny? Do you believe "We will meet someone when we are supposed to meet"? Let me apply that theory to movies. I sometimes feel some movies come into our lives exactly when we are supposed to. Not before, not after. After all if some of us had not seen the right film at the right time we would not have left everything to chase our dreams in technicolor.

The reason i'm saying all this is because last night I was blown away by the film EVERYTHING IS ILLUMUNITED. Its a 2006 film. I remember seeing the trailer & decided to let it pass. I feared it might be too arty farty in a pretentious way or too smarty pants.I have seen this DVD at my local library from time to time but never picked it up. This weekend when I was at the library I finally did take it more because of have seen most other films there than the desire to watch this film.... And then I watched it.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=tSUOYY4oukc

The film is based on the book with the same name by Jonathan Safran Foer. Its the story of a young Jewish-american guy's search for the woman who saved his grandfather from the Nazi's in ukraine during the War. Its more like a road movie. His Ukrainian hosts are
1) Alex - A premium Ukranian guy who loves american pop-culture, esp the negros.
2) Alex's crazy anti-semetic grandfather who "thinks" he is blind. Hence the need for the third character in the form of
3)"Seeing Eye Bitch" - a demented dog named Sammy Davis Jr. Jr.

The book has been acclaimed as a work of genius. It was reccomended to me by my ukranian friend when the film came out. But no one said anything about the film. I wasn't interested in watched another film about another "Jewish American Kid searching for his roots in the Eastern Block". But I have to say its a great film. It is one of the finest adaptations i have seen in recent years. I thought the script was just perfect. They added & delected things from the book which worked perfectly. It is one of the best directorial debuts by an actor in recent years. I have not seen much of Liev Schnieder's work but I didn't expect such a great film from him. The script sure helped.

Acting was on the mark by everyone. The grandfather is hilariously deranged. Eliah Wood plays the passive & scarred american tourist perfectly. But the real star & hero of the film is Alex. He steals the movie from everybody. It helps that the film is narrated by him also. Alex is played brilliantlly by Eugene Hutz. And thats how I discovered his genius.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=3Jv3b0VKec8&feature=related

Eugene is the father of GOGOL BORDELLO, a NY Gypsy Punk Rock Band. He is also a DJ & now an actor. His personal story turned out to be more fascinating than the film itself. His family fled Ukraine during the Chernobyl meltdown. They reached US after surviving various refugee camps for seven years. He is also a groundbreaking DJ who has recidance at a Bulgarian bar MEHENATA. Liev met Hutz to discuss the music for the film & thats how he decided to cast him.
Also if you have seen Wristcutters, The Russian Rocktster character EUGENE who lives with his mom & dad is based on him.

I think the next New York PFC meet should happen at Mehenata. What say New York?

School of Rock

I never thought I would include this film in my all time favs. And that also is the reason why I never bothered to watch it. But last week I saw the trailer of this film in the DVD of another film. So I got this film from the library & started watching it. I had a blast. You know the movie worked its magic if you are laughing out loudly with nobody around you. That I think should be the test for comedies.
Last film I laughed so much was Superbad. And just like Superbad, when i was at the last part of the film I realised that i'm so much fun, I was having this conversation with myself.

Me- wow i'm really enjoying this film.
Mainak - Yes you are
Me - So does that mean Its one of my fav comedies ever?

Then I think of some of my fav comedies like Office Space, Superbad for comparisons.

Mainak - Yes it can be one of your fav comedies....

10 minutes later -

Me - Man this movie rocks, I wish I had a Rock n Roll Teacher. I think I might go as far as calling it "One of my fav films ever".
Mainak - hmmmm
Me - Its not some high art for sure. Nowhere near some great films thats in my top 10, but this film has touched my heart.
Mainak- I think you are right.

And since then SCHOOL OF ROCK has become "One of my fav films....ever".
And if you love Hard Rock music of the 70s, man this movie is "Redonkulous". It took me back to my college days when Led Zep was all I was listening to. It made me wish I had a teacher like Jack Black in school. It brought tears & goosebumps at the same time when the band finally plays their song in the climax. I watched that song 10 times since last night.
I'm going to post the Music Video of that song. The actual song in the film should be seen only after knowing all the kids in the film.

And the kids are so amazing. My fav was the Japanese kid who is a Classical Piano Player - Robert Tsai. His Solo in the finale is priceless. Joan Cusack is as usual - amazing. The amazing acting among kids has to be by Joey Gaydos Jr. He plays a very stiff & shy guitar player who is chosen to play the lead. He was perfect. I thought maybe thats how he is in real life since all the kids were musicians 1st & not actors. But when I saw the special features it turned out that he is a total rockstar. But this film belongs to Jack Black. He runs over everything in this film. I think every kid should be shown this film.

In the special Features of the DVD was this video of Jack Black begging Led Zeppelin to let them use "IMMIGRANT SONG". Its hilarious. Check it out.

ROCK ON!

The Talented COEN Brothers

I just saw the trailer of BURN AFTER READING last night in a theater before SEX & THE CITY.
The new Coen Brother Film. Its insane. I mean to make 2 such great movies back to back in a year. The trailer just kicks fuckin ass. It has the regular Coen Brother people like Francis McDormand, Clooney. Plus Brad Pitt & Tilda Swilton. Its really amazing how talented these brothers are. I'm just blown.
How can they do it? Most people cannot make more than one good film in their lifetime. These guys are doing it back to back.

I cant wait to watch it.

Journalism?

I'm a very lazy person. Since i realised i would keep delaying my 1st blog, i have decided to give it a small start. And hopefully i will pick up pace on the way.
These days I'm obsessed with the 2008 Elections. I'm a Obama supporter. So you will find a little more of political stuff than anything else. I just found this amazing video on The Huffington Post.

"At the National Conference for Media Reform 2008, a producer for FOX's The O'Reilly Factor, Porter Barry, ambushes PBS's Bill Moyers and questions his "refusal" to appear on O'Reilly's show. Moyers disputes FOX's "facts" for the record and asks to interview someone at The O'Reilly Factor about Rupert Murdoch's claim that the War will make 20$ a Gallon. . The journalist crowd then reacts, chasing down Barry and intentionally giving him a dose of FOX-style bullying reportage. "

Its awesome!
